Awesome Book Apps for Kids!

jude ipad

Jude loves to read books.  He also loves the iPad, so we are always in search of great book apps for kids. The great thing about most of these apps is that they work on both the iphone and the ipad, so we have a mini library everywhere we go.

Also, we try to get the actual books that goes with the app, so he is exposed both the print and the digital copy.  We’re finding that he really likes to read the books off the self that he’s used on the iPad/iPhone.

Here are some of his current favorites (unless noted, these apps work with both iPhones and iPads):

book apps

  • All by Myself by Mercer Meyer (On sale for $.99) – In this simple, sweet, and very human picture book, Mercer Mayer’s popular Little Critter shows us all the things he can do by himself.  The wry illustrations often point to the fact that Little Critter doesn’t do everything perfectly, but he always makes an effort to do the best he can!

We love this app because it’s very interactive.  Our favorite feature is the Word/Picture Association — When pictures are touched the words “zoom up” and are spoken.

  • Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss ($3.99) – Hop on Pop remains a perennial favorite when it comes to teaching kids to read. Dr. Seuss creates uncomplicated rhymes to foster learning and inspire children to read.

This book really helps teach the little ones how to read. Our little guy can pick out and read many of the words after using this book app!

  • Eek and Slo ($.99 – iPad only) – Eek the earthworm and Slo the snail. Through an entertaining but simple story spun around these two characters, Punflay seeks to introduce your child to the key pre-number spatial concepts of up and down.

We really enjoy the great illustrations and the fun music in this app.  Jude loves to move the characters up and down!

  • Little Red Hen ($.99) – Who will help me read this story? This delightfully narrated and animated interactive storybook includes a choice of English, Español and Chinese narration and text.

The sounds in this app makes Jude giggle every time!  He’s also learning how to say things in Spanish and Chinese.

  • Three Little Pigs and the Secrets of a Popup Book ($3.99) – This book is bound to please children of all ages – the young ones will love the music and playing peek-a-boo with the characters, the older ones will enjoy the story, and older ones yet will be mesmerized by the intricate mechanical details exposed by cool xRay goggles.

One word for this app – Amazing! It’s a little hard to read the whole book, since it’s too fun to interact with it!
